Why Refrigeration is so Crucial
The pandemic has of course highlighted the need for adequate refrigeration, as much needed vaccines are rolled out. Three vaccines are set to be distributed throughout the UK, all reportedly around 90% effective against Covid 19. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines cause the person’s own cells to produce antigens and create an immune response. The later Oxford vaccine uses a virus which causes the common cold in chimpanzees, modified to be safe for humans. A coronavirus gene is ‘smuggled’ in with the vaccine and the immune system does its work.
The vaccines represent a huge advance in the battle against this devastating disease, although it is essential that they are stored properly. If they are not kept at the required low temperatures, they quickly become unstable, less potent and even toxic! This means that batches of this valuable substance have to be disposed of leaving many people vulnerable.
